Above Ground Swimming Pools! Packing The Sand Bottom.

One of the most important parts of installing an above ground swimming pool, is making the bottom of the pool as flat and smooth as possible. Every above ground pool is usually installed using fine mason sand as the material for the bottom. You can use a vermiculite base, and some are installed with foam. The additional cost for these options is normally not worth it, so mason sand is the material of choice.

In dealing with sand one thing to remember is that the sand will shift and move over time. We stress to our above ground customers that even with compacting the bottom the way we do, and brooming the sand as flat as possible, you can still end up with depression spots and little imperfections.

One of the things we do see alot in doing liner changes on above grounds, is that the majority of installers do not get there bottom flat. Most times the sand has some pretty good high and low spots. This is due to the installer not taking time to do the bottom right. Remember the water weight will not flatten out the bottom of your pool. The water will help to finish compacting the bottom, but if there are high and low spots, that's what you will have.

In this video you can watch how we do the bottom on an above ground pool. Make sure you ask the company you but your pool from how they do the bottom, and do they compact it? Very important!!

Yes the base of the above ground pool is important.
If you mix cement with the sand and and lay it down and using a trowel The mix is keep just damp not runny like a mortar mix you will have a great base that will be as smooth as a bowling green and wont wash out if you ever get a small hole.
Also kids wont be able to push their heals into the base and the cleaner will move over a smooth surface.

@ Jason, thanks for the compliment. Appreciate it. Your turning out some pretty nice videos yourself.

@ Kiwi, that sounds like a vermiculite base too me. We have done those on above grounds but the cost is usually not worth it. I do agree it will give you a smooth bottom that is not going anywhere though.

Nathan you cannot tell me that say 3 bags of cement would make it any more
costly it is the quality aspect that makes it worth while. Plain Sand and cement.

Yes three bags will not be that costly. Do you trowel that over the top or mix it in. We use up to 12 ton of sand on some of the bigger pools we build. Can't see where 3 bags mixed in will make that much difference. Would be interested in seeing exactly what you are doing.

Wow. Great video. I just had a pool installed and the guys that did mine came nowhere close to this type of perfection. Now I'm feeling a little ripped off. Wish you guys were in IL.

Yes it would be costly using Cement but then if you were using 12 ton of sand the digger must have over dug the hole or it is a big pool.
Using a ratio of 8 parts sand to 1 part cement is what is great. The greatest advantage is that if the liner ever gets a hole the sand does not wash away. Yes it requires more skill to install but the bottom will have no bumps that are hard to clean. Kiwi Normanwww.poolquartz.co.nz

@ Mary, thank you for the compliment. We worked at perfecting that system over a few months time, and have virtually no issues with any bottoms.

@ Kiwi, I agree that will give you a hard bottom that will not wash away. We do very well with our system of packing the sand and have no issues though.
